Leading on a National Stage: JAG California at NSLA
National Student Leadership Academy (NSLA)
December 2–5, 2025 | Washington, D.C.
The National Student Leadership Academy (NSLA) is the capstone leadership experience for JAG Career Association state officers and local chapter leaders. Designed by JAG National, NSLA provides students with immersive opportunities for experiential learning, civic engagement, workforce preparation, and professional networking in the heart of the nation’s capital.
This December, JAG California students traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in this transformative leadership experience. For many, it was their first time flying and their first opportunity to engage at a national level making NSLA both an exciting and meaningful milestone in their JAG journey.
Student Voice & Leadership Growth
Students shared that NSLA helped them better understand how effective leadership can drive social change and how networking can inspire creativity for future ideas and projects. Through collaboration with peers from diverse backgrounds across the country and with the guidance and support of their JAG Specialists, participants built confidence in their leadership voice and advocacy skills, learning to professionally articulate the challenges young people face in education and the workforce. One of the most meaningful aspects of the experience was connecting with other students who shared similar goals, aspirations, and passions for leadership. Participants described feeling inspired by the sense of community and motivated by the opportunity to learn from both peers and professionals.
Beyond leadership development, students also valued the opportunity to explore the nation’s rich history. Touring iconic monuments, visiting historic sites such as Ford’s Theatre, and exploring Smithsonian museums throughout Washington, D.C. added depth and context to their learning and left a lasting impression.
JAG National–Led Programming
NSLA officially began with registration, a youth orientation session, and an engaging team-building experience presented by Civics Unplugged. These activities set the stage for collaboration, relationship-building, and leadership growth throughout the academy.
Students participated in leadership sessions focused on creating social change along with CEO roundtables and advocacy training panels. Mindfulness sessions encouraged reflection and resilience, while networking activities and evening events fostered connection and community.
A highlight of the academy was JAG Career Association “A Day on the Hill”, when students visited Capitol Hill and engaged in civic activities that reinforced the importance of youth voice in democracy. The experience also included professional skills luncheons, leadership expert Q&A sessions, a National Mall monument tour, and workforce-focused workshops.
The academy concluded with a final leadership session and a closing reflection led by JAG Career Association National Officers, giving students time to reflect on their growth, accomplishments, and next steps as emerging leaders.
A Culminating Experience
For many JAG California participants, the National Student Leadership Academy represented a culminating experience, one that brought together leadership development, advocacy, career readiness, and personal growth. Students returned home with expanded perspectives, stronger leadership skills, and a renewed commitment to making a positive impact in their schools, communities, and future careers.
JAG California is proud of the students who represented the state at NSLA and grateful to JAG National for creating a powerful platform that elevates student voice and leadership on a national stage. We also extend our sincere appreciation to our JAG Specialists for their dedication, preparation, and ongoing support. Their commitment played a vital role in ensuring students were confident, prepared, and fully supported throughout the National Student Leadership Academy experience.
